Almost

It is the Season of Almost. Maybe every time I do something wrong, I’ll just say I almost got it right—quite like this piece that refused to go the way I wanted, no matter how much good Christian time I spent on it. There was a vision, and this is almost there… even if it may never fully arrive.

Lately (about 30 minutes ago), I’ve been thinking about how “almost” has its own kind of magic. Almost finishing a piece. Almost making it home before the rain starts. Almost remembering to go to bed by 10 p.m. People, I think, are built out of a thousand “almosts.” And art—well, it thrives in that space. A large part of my practice always belongs partly to tomorrow, so what I end up with isn’t ever truly finished, but forever almost done.

This portrait came out of the August Alien Art Challenge from the Alienarthive community. My thought flow was something like: Aliens → space → astronaut → stars → dreams. And somewhere in between all of that is this portrait.

While I was typing this post, the chorus of a song (which I’m absolutely going to pretend I don’t know the title of) started looping in my head. That is the words she's saying in the illustration.

On a final note maybe a lot of our “almost” is just life’s way of reminding us not to take perfection too seriously. But then maybe it's a sign I need to look into design composition theories again. Until next time, take care and stay safe!!!✨👍
